ramsey lewis - les fleurs

ramsey lewis was born on the 27th may 1935 in chicago and released over 50 albums, the first being ramsey lewis and his gentlemen of jazz in 1956
he started taking piano lessons at the age of 4 and joined his first band at the age of 15 where he met eldee young on bass and redd holt on drums, forming the ramsey lewis trio shortly after
his early trio recordings were a stripped-down form of jazz which could be almost minimalistic, but he also recorded many pop and easy listening styled albums
by the year 1965 he was one of the most successfull jazz pianists, topping the charts with hang on sloopy, wade in the water and the in crowd
in addition to performing shows around the world and recording albums he also hosts a radio show called the ramsey lewis morning show in chicago
taken from the maiden voyage album released in 1968 on cadet this song was sampled by gang starr for jazz music from their debut album no more mr. nice guy

What a great tune. Have you heard the version with Minnie Riperton doing her signature vocal? Amazingly enough, I never knew that Aretha Franklin wrote this one.

What a great song, been listening to this a lot recently. I had always mistaken this sample when I heard it on Black Sheep's 'Similak Child' for the Minnie Riperton version, but schooled myself recently.
