willie bobo grew up in spanish harlem, new york city, where he met mongo santamaria as a teenager
he was the master of the congas and the timbales, recording and playing with tito puente, cal tjader, miles davis, cannonball adderly, herbie hancock, wes montgomery, chico hamilton and sonny stitt
he recorded solo albums for blue note, verve, sussex, fantasy, roulette and columbia records
his most sought after album is do what you want to do released on the sussex label, featuring the latin funk classic broasted or fried
the album was re-issued by vampisoul a few years ago
in the late '70s he moved to los angeles where he worked as a session musician for carlos santana and bill cosby among others
this 45 was released in 1976 on the capitol label
he died at age 49 after losing his battle with cancer in 1983
