after his n°1 record post not long ago, here's alejandro's first guest mix for the this is tomorrow blog
a great selection all the way, just like the kind of stuff he presents on his new blog called la colmena de humo
here's what alejandro has to say about the mix...
A collection like this one or any other should be like one of those old Victorian Doll Houses that is filled with little doors and every room is different. You can see them in section with all the colored wall papers and little beds. Secret compartments. My sister used to have a modern version where a dragon would jump under a stair. A separate world and an invitation. Hopefully in this collection of rooms, you will be able to find a corridor or a closet where you haven’t been before. But beyond all this bla, bla, what’s at the core is just a bunch of cool records!
Enjoy this (mostly) instrumental laid back excursion...
Intro “ I’ve seen things you people wouldn’t believe”
1- B.T Express - Do You Like It? (Scepter)
From their first LP a relentless marathon.
2-Willie Mitchell - Teenie’s Dream (Hi)
A side not all that well known of the great “Pop”. Sweet guitar work from Mabon “Teenie” Hodges (hence the name).
3- Banda Nueva - Rumba#1 (Bambuco)
Lost 70’s band from my Hometwon of Bogotá, Colombia. Heavy on the Hammond. Nice...
4- Seven Seas - Pat’s Jam (Glades)
Can’t get enough of that Miami Funk lazy-bass-driving-head-nodding grooves. You can hear them swetin’ it. From the brilliant mind of Mr. Clarence Reid (aka Blowfly), these guys were his backup band according to the little I could find about them.
5- Dennis Landry - Concentration (Soul Unlimited)
Serious wah wah action on this Louisiana B side instrumental. The man’s got that foot well rooted on that pedal. Unique compared to the rest of the funk coming out of the state at the time.
Middle “Turtle”
6-Todd Rundgren - Tic Tic Tic It Wears Off (Bearsville)
From his most eccentric LP “A Wizard, A True Star”, a great little transition crammed in between some seriously disturbing mind frying stuff.
7-Brother Jack Mc Duff - Hunk O’ Funk (Blue Note)
Now two back to back hammond monster tunes by two guys with strange scottish last names. Far away stays the Haggis (thankfully) and in comes the sweaty funk. yes.
8-Jimmy McGriff - The Bird (Capitol 45)
The title of the album from which this 45 was extracted says it all “Groove Grease”.
9-Magnum - Composition Seven (Phoenix)
Best for last? Maybe...Criminally tagged to a B side truly a Doll’s House in itself with latin, jazz, funk, cowbell galore, congas and some strange sounding synths towards the end (don’t leave before that!). This one is a grower.
Outro “What seems to be the problem?”
alejandro - la colmena de humo (guest mix)
