A heady mix indeed; stirring jazz overtures with orchestra and choir, festival performances recorded live from the grassy heartlands of central Europe, modal montages inspired by pilgrimages to Asia and Africa, experiments in rhythm and sound where modern jazz meets traditional Balkan and Flamenco folk music. This is Spiritual Jazz – European style, brought to you by the ever impressive Jazzman Records, run by (Jazzman) Gerald Short in London, England.
As the '60s progressed, cultural and political revolutions occurred both in the US and in Europe. Jazz was both a victim and a saviour, with radical developments in the music occurring in both continents. In the US, artists took control of their own musical destiny as small labels broke away from the mainstream, expressing new and creative visions of freedom and peace against a backdrop of civil unrest, repression and war.
In '60s Europe the jazz community forged ahead with a different revolution; that of breaking away from mere emulation of their American counterparts. A distinctive, European jazz sound began to develop that combined traditional music from across Europe and around the world with the creative freedom so abundant in American jazz. Over time the most forward-thinking creative talents of the post-Coltrane European jazz generation crafted and nurtured sophisticated and multi-faceted styles of jazz that were as radical as they were beautiful, giving modern jazz a characteristically European flavour.
This has been wonderfully documented, and fully licensed, by Jazzman Records for this eleven track compilation, Spiritual Jazz 2: Europe. It will be available from Monday 6 February on CD and also 2xLP (180g/gatefold). Each track has been digitally restored from the original master tapes, and the release features comprehensive liner notes with individual notes on each track with original stories direct from the musicians and artists. Most of these tracks have never before been reissued – previously only available on rare LPs that change hands for hundreds of dollars.

Although it is by far the dominant topic in most other forms of popular music (and beyond that), love is not something that HipHop artists talk about very frequently. There are many more rap songs about recreational drug use, material wealth, not-quite-legal activities or casual sex than there are about that other four letter word, L.O.V.E. In comes „The Luv Bug“, a concept album entirely devoted to the big topic: From the sparks of initially meeting an attractive woman (Familiar Stranger) to planning the rest of your life together (Future Love), from make-ups (Keep On Loving) to break-ups (Summer‘s Gone) and from fantasizing about an ethereal beauty (Out Of Orbit) to deception (Adesina), Chicago MCs Just Jay & Wisdm O.N.E. a.k.a. 1773 touch on a wide variety of subjects.
The musical foundation is provided by the other end of this transatlantic musical endeavour, producer Trishes from Vienna/Austria. He manages to create quite different vibes - from spacey futuristic Beats to almost classic Boom Bap sound and even farther back to 80s drum computer patterns – while maintaining enough of a common thread and feeling to keep the music cohesive. All together, this is a pretty infectious record. Or, to quote from the intro: „The Luv Bug will bite you if you don‘t watch out… Watch Out!“

Four of the most dance floor friendly tracks from the best-selling Truth & Soul compilation, African Music Today is finally available on a handsome picture sleeve 45 single. The full-length, which was released a year ago was curated by world famous world record collector and Soul Fire founder, Phillip Lehman.
The first song on side A features the Zafari track, King Masaru. An Ethiopian big band that was first introduced to world through their Soul Fire 45 which featured the dance floor killer, Addis Ababa. The second song on side A, percussive Movement No.1, is by the group Friends of The Family. It features a heavy drum break with gang vocals. Side B is a Mulatu inspired song by the group, The Original Brothers. The second song on side B is another track by Friends of Family which a virtuosic Kalimbo solo over a heavy drum break.

Jean Wells’ story is not an extraordinary one in the world of soul, although her voice certainly was. Her biggest hit ‘Have A Little Mercy’ from 1967 was a glorious slice of deep soul, a plea to a lover, whom she is addicted to, but who doesn’t seem to notice. Her gospel-trained voice perfectly encapsulating those feelings, whilst a stark arrangement dominated by an ethereal organ and dramatic horn stabs heightens the unbearable effect this man is having on Jean’s life. Yet at the time this record only reached number 25 in the R&B charts, just another bit of genius amongst many, thrown out by the black American music industry at one of its most creative and profligate periods.

The records that followed were pretty much my way of coping without snapping on anyone or doing something stupid that would jeopardize my future. Back in September 2007, Freestyle Records released Black Feeling an album project brought to life by Australian musical supremo Lance Ferguson, the man responsible for Freestyle soul-jazz organ trio Cookin On 3 Burners, as well as The Bamboos & Lanu projects on Tru Thoughts Recordings.

Each track was presented under a pseudonym to give the impression of an album you would find whilst digging in a Caribbean record shop or American thrift store. As a collection of reworked classics, the album set dance floors alight across the world, indeed, the single Hippy Skippy Moon Strut by The Mighty Show-Stoppers became a huge selling 12 inch, and also notched up well over 350,000 individual viewings on You Tube to date!

Now in 2011, Freestyle Records is pleased as punch to be releasing this follow up album, The main concept with the 'Black Feeling' cover versions is that the finished product should not just be some kind of carbon copy of an established classic and Lance explains his approach further: ´The initial study of the original recordings enables me to be freer with interpreting, re-arranging and changing them for the final album. Often I will make changes to make a track a little more attractive or usable for DJs and the dancefloor in general´

And you can certainly hear that in regards to the first two tracks ´Shaft In Africa´ and ´Burning Spear´ as their bottom end and drum breaks are beefed up to give funk heads and B Boys maximum opportunity to throw shapes to their hearts content! In direct comparison to those up tempo dance floor stormers, the album also features more reflective moments, namely the versions of Ronnie Fosters 'Mystic Brew' and ´Oboe' by Jamaican keyboard King Jackie Mittoo, whose gentle, skanking feel is like a warm Caribbean breeze cooling you down, and Lances tactic of shifting a classic tune into another genre is a masterstroke as exemplified on the salsa version of 'Nautilus' on which keyboardist Simon Mavin injects his incredible latin piano skills to stunning effect.

The entire album sparkles with energy and display an intelligent and varied approach to reworking much loved classic as Lance states: ´I think it's really important to flip the cover-versions up and offer the listener something new so often I'll change instrumentation around to achieve something unique´. And something unique is what he and his crew of top musical talent have achieved - welcome to Black Feeling Two!.

After four successful SXSW shows and a Midwest tour this spring, The Right Now returns with a new single to celebrate Record Store Day on Saturday, April 16, 2011. The band debuts 2 new songs, “If I Wanted To” and “I Am Who I Say I Am,” on a double A-side 45 which will be available in local record stores, online retailers, the band website, as well at their live shows.
These two songs are from a new recording session for The Right Now’s upcoming album, which will be released in early 2012.

MPM have teamed up with the Laid Back Radio collective from Brussels to add a new chapter to the metaphysics of a jazzthing. 74 MILES AWAY is a collaboration between Belgian jazz pianist/composer Pierre Anckaert and producers Monkey Robot (previously known as Infinitskills), curated by LBR founder Julius Mourlon. Pierre Anckaert composed and recorded four electric jazz tracks with his trio. Monkey Robot have radically reworked these four songs featuring singers AHU (One Handed Music, best known from the first Flying Lotus album), Carina Andersson (the voice behind 4 Hero's epic take on Minnie Riperton's “Les Fleurs”) and Miles Bonny (MPM, DJ Day).

i must admit that i've never heard of this small label called cultures of soul before jeff contacted me a few weeks ago
it's never too late though, so here are some of their latest releases...

The band is a local soul group from Boston called Jordan Valentine and the Sunday Saints. Growing up Jordan was heavily influenced by her mother's southern cooking and love of Motown. Now Cultures of Soul is putting out their first 7 inch with two great tracks. The A side is a masterful cover of "Tell Me What's On Your Mind" and the B side is an original sister funk track with howls of joy reminiscent of Betty Davis.

Fabulous Fugitives featuring Michael Sharkey is a rare doubler A sider containing two awesome deep funk cuts from this Memphis, Tennessee group. Originally it was released in 1973 on the J’Ace label owned by local gospel record label owner Style Wooten. The group only put out one 45 and the orginal masters have long since been destroyed as far as we know. The A side, “What the World Needs” is a politically charged funk bomb. The flip side, “You Made Me Cry” is a more straight forward funk track with plenty of fat drum fills.

Josh Fontan (Beatspoke) and Joan Pedrosa (El Chavo) are the brains behind Debilos. Although clearly rooted in hip hop their music branches out from forgotten Spanish folklore and touches on many different styles creating a fusion that is fresh and hard- hitting. Based out of their native city of Barcelona, they have been collaborating with some of the most talented underground artists from all over the world, such as Cyne, Non Genetic, RQM or Modill. Their first Ep Dimarts i Dijous was included in several music magazines (Rock de Lux, Serie B, H Magazine) as best spanish hip hop album in 2008. For their new release Debilos founded Molts Records, a label to promote local and international talents.
This new release is a taste of fresh organic broken beats seasoned with old “bossa-jazzy” samples featuring the talents of Barcelona based Norwegian singer Anqui. The fat drum breaks and powerful string chords along with the vocal arrangements and lyrics create an addictive mix between hip hop and pop. With Turn My Clock, Debilos hit us again with their unique style of creating dope tracks by digging deep in the crates to find amazing samples.

Something that is probably evident by now from some of my past tapes is that I'm a big fan of piano, especially jazz piano playing. It's one of my favorite instruments, which I also grew up around, hearing my mother play classical and Scott Joplin rags almost every day as a kid.
I love hearing musicians bang on the piano with emotion too, rather than just play the keys delicately. I was reminded that the piano is a percussion instrument the other day I was sitting in my room for two hours with my little midi keyboard trying to teach myself the chords to "Maiden Voyage," just kept hitting the keys like a drum. It was great.
Anyway - here's a couple cuts for folks to warm up to as the weather cools off. There's only a little solo piano - these are just songs that I feel are "driven" mainly by the piano, even in the case that it's on an artist's record who isn't a pianist, like Yusef Lateef.

In February 2009, two partners in rhyme, Rabbi Darkside and Hired Gun set out from Brooklyn, New York to rendezvous with good friend, beat maker, and fellow world traveler DJ Zajazza in Brazil.
